6. ALBA, MATEO AND ANNA - HOPE FOR A NEW GENERATION OF IN BILLIARDS
EuroYouth is one of CEB’s most important events for youth billiards, with both 3-cushion and 5-pins on the schedule and over 50 young participants each year. Last year we saw two girls alongside the boys in the 5-pins discipline, Emma Bjerregaard from Denmark and Anna Pechmanova from Czech Republic. This year, Emma did not participate but Anna instead had the company of Alba Wollerup from Spain, who competed in the 3-cushion U17 category. Here we see them together with Luisa López, one of the referees during the event.
Alba Wollerup, Luísa López and Anna Pechmanova
We also had a little talk with Alba and her father about playing billiards.
Both Alba’s parents come from the billiards community, and her father Martin is also active as a referee for the Spanish federation, so it was natural for Alba and her little brother Mateo to take up the game.
“We practice with our dad a couple of times a week”, says Alba. “It’s a beautiful game.”
“Unfortunately, we live an hour from the billiard hall”, says Martin Wollerup, her father. “So, it takes a lot of time just to get there and back, but it’s worth it because they like it so much. And they don’t beat me – yet!”
Alba and Mateo Wollerup
In EuroYouth this year, both Alba and Mateo played in the 3-cushion U17 discipline. They did not qualify from the group stages, but Alba had the U17 highest run of 7, the same as Noa Thiaudière from France and eventual champion Bruno Martinez from Spain. She beat Jayden Van Buren from the Netherlands 25-22 with a nice average of 0.520, and Mateo also won a match against compatriot Sebastian Tomas. So it was a very promising debut for the Wollerups, who drove with their parents for almost 5 hours to get to Los Alcázares, where the competition was held for the second year in a row.
“It’s a long way to go”, says Martin. “But it’s a chance to see other players and learn from them.”
And judging from the interest from Alba and Mateo, who watched as many matches as they could and proudly wore the Team España colors all through the event, this is a couple of siblings who love the game and want to continue to get better. It gives us hope for the new generation, and we wish the Wollerups the best of luck in their billiards career.
